Review on πŸ“¦ Pelican 1510 Case With Customizable Padded Dividers in Black by Melanie Lujan

Revainrating 4 out of 5

A very good and safe way to transport your fragile equipment.

I travel a lot between the US and Central America, often with expensive and fragile equipment: cameras, lenses, flashes, as well as logic analyzers, circuit boards, defibrillator prototypes, etc. and is very suitable for small equipment, including photographic equipment but not for larger instruments. Although the product description states the external dimensions, the usable volume is significantly lower given the thickness of the plastic and the inner padding, which is not surprising. Here are the interior volume dimensions, measured with padding: Length: 19 1/4 inches; Width: 10" 1/4" measured across the opening (volume is slightly beveled for shape reasons) Depth: 5" 1/4 deep (case itself) + 1" 3/8 (lid with Pelican lid organizer 1519 for 1510 and 1514 ). Add to that the volume of the wheel arches on either side and you get a pretty good idea of what volume we're talking about. Dividers consist of an off-center (1/2 inch thick) Velcro pocket that runs the length of the body and other Velcro pockets (1/4 inch thick) that can be placed on either side of the body. This might not be the most flexible combination, and you'll need to spend some time thinking about how to organize your gear, especially with long lenses that won't fit vertically. All these measurements are approximate as the padding is slightly flexible and stretchable. The lid organizer mentioned above offers significantly more storage space thanks to the soft foam that is included. I don't regret the purchase at all, but you might be wondering what to put in which case given what fits in the front when closed. See my review on this product page for more details. The separators are black, which doesn't help finding anything there in low light. I systematically pack a small flashlight, always in the same organizer lid pocket, so I can find it. The case itself is great. The wheels, while small and hard, are of good construction and have performed well so far. The pull handle looks a bit odd as it's just a thick plastic blade. The handle itself is too wide for those carry-on bags that have a strap to attach to the luggage handle - too bad. It's not as discreet as I'd like when traveling as I obviously paid good money for the packaging. Whatever is in it is not a problem in the US but can be a problem in third world countries. All in all a very solid device. While this isn't a panacea, it certainly increases the survivability of my gear significantly. Feel free to leave comments or ask questions.
