They are functional and give me a little security. As others have said, this is to keep honest people honest. It will be a few more seconds before the thief leaves with my rack and pole, that's all. I had to "significantly" change the key to use the lock feature. Remember that the latch will fit into the bracket the same as the latch you are replacing. I couldn't put the key in the lock when I installed it. I had to remove the plastic tab from the key, cut about 3/16" from the corner of the key, and bend the top of the key at about a 35 degree angle before I could open the latch. Since I use one latch on my luggage rack and one on my bar counter, I had to make the same modifications to the second key and bend the opposite corner of the other to make it work. I also had to use a different set of washers than the ones that came with it because the screw head that came with it was smaller than the washers that came with the kit. Overall I'm happy with my purchase only because I don't have the equipment to make my own fasteners and was able to modify their product to work with my setup.
