And yes, it's true that other things, like thin steel wool, are good at starting a fire. But I find magnesium sticks a great agony to scratch and work with. Just grab a match for these firesticks and they'll glow enough to light the tinder. And I find it amazing. I put 1/3 sticks in all my emergency fire starter kits (along with matches, lighter, lighter and various types of micro tinder) and this insurance policy guarantees I'll have a flame when I really need it.
