First, there are hundreds of types of biocarriers on the market and all of them work to some extent, but this product has always been stable. We're talking fine gravel the size of a huge area for bacteria to colonize to filter your tanks. After 10-15 days my matrix is covered with a nice thick layer of bacteria busy eating ammonia, nitrite and converting to nitrate which my plants love. This 1 gallon is enough to fill 3 typical media containers with product and lasted almost 2 years with no signs of wear like I've seen with ceramic rings.
