Okay we don't usually write reviews but people need help with this product! This is my experience in finding a faulty irrigation valve! First of all >>> IT WILL NOT RECOGNIZE your valve! It can ONLY trace the cable and you have to guess, check, pray where the valve boxes are! If you have a multi-core cable, it cannot isolate individual cores and traces the entire cable. (By the way, the cable tracks pretty well!) NO INSTRUCTIONS IN THE BOX. It took me a long time to learn how to listen for sounds! The tracker works, but you have to listen to the sounds! The most important >>> The cable is under NO-SOUND! You need to know where the cable starts. Dig where you know the main line is and locate the wire (next to the controller). Run your wand over the cord to get an idea of how the tones should sound! When you swing the probe over the wire it makes a buzzing noise on either side of the wire, but when you move it OVER the wire it's almost silent. (When you put the probe on the wire, there is a very LOUD buzz) You have to be very careful not to hear any sound! Once you've learned the sound, take a can of spray paint and mark the line NO SIGNAL! (CAUTION, you do NOT need a loud buzz) This should be your main line, with the wires running along with the main line. Irrigation systems usually place the valves and the valve box directly on the main line and run the cable together with the main line! You'll need to examine both sides of the main line and cable to find where the valve boxes are located. I had to dig in several places to see different sized pipes in my main line and trying to figure out which way they went! I found 5 or 6 valves and I know the approximate position of valve 6. Right now it's not causing any problems so I'll look for it later. That kind of work but hopefully your irrigation gate will place multiple valves in the same area instead of being scattered like mine! I have friends who are irrigation contractors and they tell me that even on the most expensive machines, valves are sometimes hard to come by! There are no problems with cables, but yes with valves! You can sometimes hear a loud HOOMING noise right above the valve on a $600 machine, but even on expensive machines they mostly track the cable! Much luck
