I used a couple of these to test the soil in my garden. To test the mud you need to prepare some mud with distilled water and then pass it through a coffee filter. I found that my soil is fairly alkaline and this helped me choose a tree that would grow well in my yard. It cost a few dollars, not guessing.

Pros

Different discoloration areas of the pH content differ by comparing the ratio of the color charts: the smaller the number, the stronger the acid, the larger the value, the stronger the alkalinity.
