I "inherited" this filtration system when I bought this house. As a year went by, I replaced all of the kitchen filters, including this one. I've worked in the water treatment industry for a while and I don't know why this was installed. The main purpose of a carbon block filter is to remove odors (chlorine and sulfur) and sediment and some other chemicals from the water. We're on the municipal water supply and that wasn't a problem. This is mainly due to dissolved calcium, better known as hardness. These filters won't do anything to reduce or eliminate harshness, but since I have them I'll use them. I already installed the fabric softener. My next step is to replace this filter with a reverse osmosis system for drinking and cooking water.
