Interesting but disappointing

I recently replaced a window regulator on my 2007 BMW 525i and needed to reset the window catcher fault code. I bought this device for this purpose. It connected to my phone instantly via Bluetooth, but it took a few tries for the OBDMate app to recognize it - a swipe for usability. The OBDMate app was asking for permissions on my file system, camera and location in order to work properly. All of this made no sense as the bluetooth connection didn't need my location and. Why does he need access to my camera? I have denied permission. I was able to see my car's RPM without permissions, but the device (or the app) wasn't able to detect a service alert, check engine codes, or detect two faults (windows or parking lights). Following the instructions, I tried the device on my other car, a 2013 Santa Fe Sport. I was able to connect, but this car had no defects. However, I was certain that the problem was not with the BMW. I tried an alternative app, Car Scanner, which was also able to correctly read my cars' RPMs, but didn't give any error codes. Ultimately, this device did not perform as expected and is being returned. As a note to anyone reading this review, let's take a closer look at the information we've provided. Autophix/ODBMate should explain their permissions better.

Pros
  • Sturdy construction
Cons
  • No automatic controls
