My wife and I are baseball fans and we recorded our favorite team's games on a VCR to watch later we could "rush" through advertising. However, playback quality wasn't as good as we would have liked and tape management was problematic. We wanted a digital video recorder (DVR) to replace the VCR. Our local cable TV was charging about $12 a month for the DVR service, plus an additional $12 a month to rent the DVR itself. We considered getting our own TiVo, but that included a TiVo subscription for $15/month plus $2.50/month for renting a special card from the cable company that had to be inserted into the TiVo for it to work. Then we discovered Magnavox. HDD/DVD recorder. In this way, without cables, without additional subscriptions or renting a card, we can record one program at a time and play it back at any time, even while we are recording another program. The hard drive records about 97 hours of program at the highest quality level and many more hours at the lower quality level. The device can also burn to DVD and play DVD. Setup is easy: connect the cable company's cable to the back of the Magnavox and the Magnavox patch cable to the back of the TV. You will also need (for the highest quality playback) an HDMI cable connecting the Magnavox and the TV. You can also use the cables that came with the device, but this will affect the playback quality. After connecting Magnavox to your TV, you need to enter the time and date and then let Magnavox search for available channels. Recording a program is very simple - in HDD mode, press the Time Prog button, enter the required information and press Time Prog again. To play a recorded program, in HDD mode, press the "Title" button, select Select the program you want, then use the controls like a DVD player: forward, backward, forward, etc. The picture quality is much better than a VCR's videotape, and recorded programs are easier to manage. Unlike a DVR provided by a cable company or TiVo, Magnavox only records programs at a time.
