Commercially compostable. These 12-ounce bowls are made out of paper, not plastic. They were a little lighter than expected and I was concerned if the bowl would hold up in a hot soup bowl, burst or leak so I filled one with boiling water. After waiting 10 minutes I checked that there were no leaks and although the outside or bowl was warm it didn't feel hot. Good disposable bowls.
