Review on Bellari VP130 Preamp Headphone Amplifier by Ricky Rey

Revainrating 2 out of 5

Hum, buzz, buzz

I really like this preamp. For me, it fits in many ways: handset, headphone output, compactness and beautiful design. Too bad the company doesn't seem to care about making the amp quiet. The standard power supply is just terrible. I've tried everything to make it silent and nothing seems to work with it. At best I can get it to the point where the hum is barely noticeable when nothing is playing, but for the most part it picks up AM radio, which easily rivals my recordings. With the replacement of the power supply, the situation has improved noticeably, which is not easy, since, compared to most products on the market, a circuit that reverses the polarity of the power supply was chosen. Also, I don't have to worry about changing the power adapter to make the product usable. This is clearly a common problem as there are many posts about it both in reviews and in various news forums. I still hum a bit with mine, but at least it's not very noticeable now most of the time. Most frustratingly, the company doesn't seem to endorse its own product. I tried asking them for suggestions on how to minimize this noise, but nobody answered me. In hindsight, I wish I had listened to other reviewers who reported this issue and moved my business elsewhere.

Pros
  • Preamps
Cons
  • Not as thick as other picks
