Solid + able to handle thick hair.

One of my least favorite activities is looking for a replacement iron. When mine starts to weaken, I try to endure it and hold on for as long as possible. all BC challenging task ahead! What I find difficult is the fact that what might work well for one hair type might not work for another, so a thorough review may or may not suit your hair type's needs! I'll try to report those unknowns... Overall the device is solid... And at $50 it should be! It has a comfortable ergonomic fit and grip in hand, and although it has a material base, it does not cause wrist fatigue with prolonged use. The buttons are strategically placed so you don't accidentally change settings. The cable is long and can be rotated as needed. I'm sure that's the official term, right?! Haha.! In fact, it takes 2-3 minutes to reach full productive heat - I find that standard for most tools. I noticed that too after 7-10 minutes. If you still use. (especially with longer/thicker hair like mine) Best to let the iron recalibrate/heat up for 2-3 minutes. Just work evenly and don't waste your time, effort and hair care. Again, I find this standard in non-parlor tools! If you use the above rule of thumb. and higher temperature - it can handle thicker, wavy hair well. At lower temperatures, this can easily result in fine or straight curls in the hair. I can't say for sure how it performs on ethnic hair, but I have THICK, naturally wavy hair (20+ min blow dry!) and I'm happy with the result. My hair takes about 15 minutes. to straighten up and time for the iron to recalibrate itself. and I believe that it meets my expectations. We hope this information helps you make a decision - stay healthy!
