No no no, suitable for water filtration and softening

I've been fascinated by my parents' gravity water filter for a while and was dying to try one of my own. This one looks similar, although you can tell the quality isn't as good. However, it is made from a nice shiny stainless steel and all the parts fit together well and fit together well. The stand is very solid and even the nozzle appears to be stainless steel (not 100% sure). It holds enough water for a small household and is easy to fill. However... it doesn't filter the water very well. We have a well, but the water straight from the tap has an odd bland taste. This filter doesn't improve anything, let alone the taste, and I've even seen it look a little blurry. I'm wondering if fake filters are to blame and maybe I'll try replacing them with branded ones. However, for the price, it's not what I was hoping for. Also to note - the instructions are mostly useless. Another reviewer mentioned many things the brand company will be including in its product literature that this company is sorely lacking. Maybe my bad experience is due to user error... but the average user probably doesn't know any better. UPDATE: This water filter passed the reddening test spectacularly. I filled the filters overnight (planted vertically under water in the lower container, weighted down with circles). I then installed them in the top bin to try out the red dye test. I used the correct dye to water ratio as directed by the brand manufacturer but the filters ended up performing very unevenly. One filter remained almost transparent the whole time; one turned bright pink and the other only gushed red water. I've checked the gasket on each filter and none should be leaking, but who knows. This caused me to flood the entire kitchen and myself with red water and had to abort the mission prematurely due to a fast draining filter. I tested the water with a TDS meter before and after the test - I know these filters aren't designed to reduce TDS but I was curious. Before the test (with red dye) the number was 700ppm (our water is typically 500-600ppm with no dye). After passing through the filters, the light pink water was 2500ppm, which seems very counterintuitive to me. Needless to say, these filters went straight to the bin. I will keep the stainless steel body if I ever want to buy big brand filters but I will definitely not be buying from this brand again.

Pros
  • Undercounter and countertop filtration
Cons
  • No instructions
