Review on Uflex Single Lever Side Mount Control by Giovanni Bedjohn

Great replacement for old worn controls

I bought these and a B184Merc (exactly the same but with integral trim switch) to convert a 1977 Sylvan to replace the original Marmac M-1093-D2 . Control. For what it's worth, the boat comes equipped with a Mercruiser 120 sterndrive. The original cables had mercury ends on the motor and 10-32 on the controls. The B183 does not have a trim switch. The B184 and B184Merc have a built in trim switch. The B184Merc is exactly the same as the B184 except it includes an X50 neutral switch and K35 adapter. Note that B183 and B184 have a two-wire neutral switch. B184merc has a four-wire "X50" switch. I don't know what the extra 2 pins are for, but I definitely didn't need them for my simple 2-wire neutral safety switch. K35 adapters are simple extensions for cable ends on controllers (IF you need them). They extend the cable lug about 2100 inches (a little less than 2-1/8 inches). This boat had trim controls on the dashboard. I considered using a B184 to be able to regulate it with a switch (I would need to connect a relay) but finally gave up. These knobs are small, and the trim switch doesn't make the knob as easy or comfortable to grip (although not bad). I chose the B183 which has no trim switch and is a bit easier to hold and manipulate. I also figured if I let someone else steer the boat they couldn't accidentally adjust the trim. I was glad that I was able to go full throttle to almost exactly 90 degrees. The old Marmac controls were sloppier and probably hit 120-130 degrees. I never cared. Maybe some tweaking would have fixed the problem, but after 40 years of use I decided it was time for a new control box. Very nice overall feel and smooth ride. BTW, to operate the engine throttle separately without shifting, the entire lever is pulled out about 1/2 inch and then rotated to the correct position for a quick idle warm-up or whatever. I also installed some Seastar Extreme cables and now the boat handling looks amazing and makes the boat more enjoyable to drive. Highly recommended! I will update this review if anything changes, although I doubt it will.
