Review on Samsung Galaxy 32GB Mocha Verizon by Josh Allen

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Really good tablet but not for what I wanted to use it for.

Pros: The tablet looks very nice, although I don't like buying non-black tablets. This default mocha color isn't a deal breaker, in fact you have to hold it in some light to see the evil mocha color or it just looks "dark to black" when not in the light. It doesn't really matter because I have it in a black case. The screen isn't bad, very high resolution, bright vibrant colors and nice crisp text with a good update. However, there is one noticeable 'feature' of this screen if that's what you're looking for. You can see the screen doesn't look as smooth as other HD screens, it has a kind of stripe effect when viewed up close, say closer than 6 inches. That's the kind of effect you see when watching videos on low-resolution screens, but it's not that big of a deal for me as I don't always hold it directly in front of me. In a way, this tablet looks like a successor. to the legendary Nexus 7 (2013). It works very well, very smooth and fast. The screen quality (dpi) doesn't quite match the N7 when shooting very close up, but at around 30cm away it looks very close and looks pretty good. The attached file (left) shows Tab A and Nexus 7 (right) for size comparison. The bad: I bought it with the intention of putting it in my car for trips where I still need to make phone calls and do other tasks. It's much easier on a bigger screen, but the built-in dialer will NOT make phone calls over the cellular network or even over a data network with a SIM card. It looks like this dialer only works if you connect it to a modern (expensive) Samsung phone to make calls. This was very disappointing as the dialer looks good and has a nice dark theme and Google Assistant can probably send commands to it (one of my needs). I tried to pair it with my Galaxy Note 8 but it's too old. Instead, you must use a third-party data selector app. I have tested Google Voice and it works, but Google Voice is forced into portrait mode and I always have my tablet in landscape mode, also requires a Google account with Google Voice. As I am a T-Mobile customer, I was able to use their app called DIGITS to make calls using any of my real numbers on my T-Mobile account (very useful), including the number assigned to the data plan for these Tablet. It CAN make and receive calls using DIGITS, but there's another problem here: Digits gets stuck in constant light mode, which is a real shame because it's too bright and looks very ugly; and there is no voice command support for "Hey Google" other than "Hey Google, open DIGITS" and from there you have to navigate manually. Someone at T-Mobile told me that DIGITS will get dark theme support sometime in Q2, but that remains to be seen. Aside from the flaws that made my use case difficult, this is a good tablet and I think everyone will be happy with it. As this tablet is the closest thing to my goals I will definitely keep it to myself as my old Nexus 7 has been in my mouth for quite some time. Worth a try at least, but worth buying if you want. high quality tablet.
