For the money this is a good buy

As the black one is selling for a hundred bucks right now this is a great value. When you get it home, be sure to visit the Kodak website and download the latest firmware. It's a two-step process where you have to update it to a mid-range firmware update and then update the update. It is not possible to switch from the stock firmware to the current firmware without an intermediate step. So if you browse Kodak's site, make sure you find one that says "below" a certain number and one that says "above" a certain number. The camera's touch interface is a bit unreliable, but workable. Sometimes I had to turn the camera off and on again to make it respond again. If the Zi8 cost a hundred bucks I'd probably choose it instead. I also ordered an external Lava mic for it, as well as a pair of 16GB SDHC cards, extra batteries and an external charger. Overall I spent a lot less than the Panasonic HD camcorder it replaced. In fact I could buy 5 of these and all the accessories for what I paid for 1 Panasonic 4 years ago. Like all budget camcorders, they are designed to be used in well-lit areas to get decent recording quality. One thing I will miss about the HD camcorder it replaced is the zoom. They don't have an optical zoom, and I wasn't expecting it in this form factor. The lack of a 30x optical zoom simply means I have to be mindful of camera placement and where I'm standing.

Pros
  • Good product for the price
Cons
  • Lots of stuff
