I've never used this for rice and potatoes. I use this because it's very hard after grating potatoes. I use this to squeeze the remaining water out of the potato strips. easier than gauze for this purpose, but I've broken a few tabs from gripping too tight (bought this to replace a friend's tab that I broke and recently bought one for myself). This model of the hit has survived at least ten batches. (hasn't broken or bent yet) and is dishwasher safe so I'm happy with that. A small downside is that it is sometimes difficult to take apart or put back together. It doesn't break though, it just takes some time and effort sometimes.
