It's sturdy but small (as advertised!) so don't expect it to be more than 3-4 months old. Our kitten is 3 months old and we will put him in a big box. But it was great when he settled into our kennel. High sides are good, but no, they don't stop the kitten from scattering litter. No box without a lid will fit when you have an excavator like ours. The drawer has a pretty ridiculous garbage fill line (very high). If you've filled in to this line, the "high" sides become moot. We do not do that. Once it's no longer a litter box it can be used for many things - it's a very durable plastic. Rubbish bin in the garage, small bathtub for cleaning etc.
