motor built in, tried it out a bit because my stepper motor was on the side wall of the step. Aligning the spacers and screws was a bit of an issue. Keep gaskets and bolts away from the old engine because you won't have a spare. I'm glad I did. Make sure the step is in the locked position by removing the motor as the steps will fall down when the motor comes out and your hand will not be blocked. Leave the steps in this position to reinstall the new motor so you're good to go. I am very happy with this purchase and product on Amazon, retail prices are two and three times higher and the part is wrong.
