Everything was fine at first. My wife, daughter, and I each attached a car key, and I tied one to a string in my laptop bag. My AirTag has fallen out of mine a few times. The worst was at the gas station (fortunately not far from home). The AirTag failed sometime between filling up and getting back into the car. I only realized it was missing from my keys late in the evening and I had to go back to find it in the middle of the night. Yesterday, as I was leaving work, I took my keys out of my pocket and my AirTag popped out of my keychain and flew through the air. My daughter and wife haven't had any major issues with it, but we're not making any changes and have switched to a different product. They could be clipped in a pocket or something, but I don't recommend using them as a keychain.
