The bubbles are too big, works great after the airstone mod!

This is a good price for 3 of these filters. I only needed 1 but it's nice to know I have 2 extras. For me the bubbles were too big and ended up causing too much turbulence on the water surface in my tank. I just didn't like how it was made. Of course it can be good for the fish. Aside from how these bubbles looked when they broke the surface of the water, they were also loud. So I went to Petco and bought these little cylindrical air stones. They happen to fit perfectly into the inner cylinder of these sponge filters. You need to disassemble the bottom of the sponge filter. You will then see spoke-like supports supporting the center tube. You'll need to trim these supports with something. Then use pliers to pull out the center tube. It is only held by friction. Then insert the air stone. It's too loose for me, but I noticed that the airstone tube is narrower, so I just cut off a few millimeters from the top. That was enough to get him good contact and I pushed him in as hard as I could. When reassembling, you may need to cut off the original hose connector slightly to mount the diffuser. After making this mod the bubbles are much smaller and the noise level is much lower. In my book, now it's perfect!
