I have a set of these and a set of 100 magnets. The magnets they contain (with the new stronger magnets) are definitely stronger than the more expensive brands. Colors are also slightly lighter. If you already have a set of Magnatiles, they are compatible. In comparison, this is a great set to start with. They come with additional window tiles as well as blank squares. This set also includes small rectangles and a car/train magnet base. There may be other additional tiles, but I'm not 100% sure. I'm sure the description has this information, but I just wanted to give an honest review and a simple comparison. Magnatils only come in plain squares, three types of triangles, and large squares. As I said before, the Playmags set has a little more variety with some extra shapes. If you don't have extra forms, you won't miss them, and I don't know how much extra forms ADD to the experience, but they certainly don't detract from it. However, I'm 30 and only make fun geometric towers. The child may want to build a house with windows or love the magnetic cart. For me it's neat and I'll use it occasionally, but I wouldn't have noticed if it wasn't included in the kit. I have a 10 month old daughter who bought them for but her greatest joy in tiles is destroying any structure my husband or I have built. I expect this will change over time. In any case, if I were to start a new one without buying a set of Magnatils I would probably save the extra money and buy a set of toys knowing what I know now. What attracts me is how much stronger the magnets are. I will say that the tiles in Magnatils are stronger than our other set (a random set from a target, I think someone gave us because they wanted us to see how cool magnetic toys are). I love this toy and the concept behind it. I have already bought my daughter two sets of 100Count (one set of Magnatils and one set of Playmags) and will probably continue to add to our collection over time. I will most likely buy the Playmags brand rather than the Magnatiles brand, both because of the cost and the strength of the magnet. I also just bought a set for my niece's 5th birthday (I bought toy magnets) so my sister and her family can have as much fun as we do here. I intend to buy my other niece (her older sister) a set in August for her 7th birthday. I'm a real fan of these tiles and I'm really excited that my daughter is growing up with a toy that encourages foresight. and imagination. I know she already enjoys destroying our buildings, so I'm sure she will enjoy building her own. (And I will enjoy revenge by striking them down.)
