Review on Toshiba P300 500GB Desktop SATA 6Gb/s 7200rpm Internal Hard Drive - 3.5 Inch by Johnny Wheat

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Best value for money

I have bought about 5 of these drives over a period of about 2 years. Every time I build a new computer for someone, I spend dozens of hours researching what is the most economical and powerful for the money. And every time for the last 2 years, the Toshiba P300 3TB has always been one of the fastest drives at a reasonable price in the benchmark results. Yes, there are several faster drives out there with the same 7200 RPM and the same amount of buffer cache, but they are $20-30 more expensive. How I decide which hard drive to buy is by looking at the RPM, the transfer rate, and then the price. RPM gives you a base to understand how fast the transfer speed will be. Then you'll want to look at the actual benchmarks to get a more accurate number on how fast the transfer rate is. Then look at the price. You shouldn't pay more than $30 per TB if you're buying a 2TB or larger hard drive. With a base price of $75 plus tax, this drive only costs about $81, which is just $27. which basically makes it a bargain at the moment. I can't comment on durability as I've only had it for 2 years. Since most hard drives die after around 4-5 years of continuous use, I can say first hand that they are quite fast and maintain high read and write speeds even when transferring large amounts of data. I tested this multiple times when migrating back my Steam games library which is about 400GB. The only thing I have to say is that I think these drives are pretty loud compared to other drives. It might just be because they are 3TB drives as I only have old 1TB 7200RPM drives to use for reference under load.
