Review on Dell UltraSharp 2209WA Black Widescreen Monitor - Enhanced for Wide Screen Experience by Rob Williams

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Need more of this in the market!

I totally agree with the previous reviewer. I have searched long and hard for a replacement for my aging Trinitron CRT. I work with photos and the usual low cost TN based panels just did NOT meet my actual color photo editing needs. *shudders* So an expensive IPS or (P)VA monitor seemed like the only option. But I'm also a gamer and fast response time is very important. The xVA panels just couldn't keep up and were a few frames behind at best! Then you had to have IPS, but they cost $600 or more. So I waited. And waited. I finally found this 2209WA with a new low cost eIPS panel at half the price. It's so popular with enthusiasts that Dell consistently sells out. No, it's not a perfect monitor, but it does what it does very well and at a reasonable price. and there is no way to adjust it. Fortunately, setting Brightness=0 and Contrast=50% gives good results for web work, although perhaps not for CMYK printing. 8-) You can have finer control over RGB intensity, but not by much. I find most "modes" useless on LCD monitors. Dynamic Contrast is off by default, HOORAY!* This is not 16:9 (1680x1050 resolution) so 1080p HD videos with 1:1 scaling will not play. There's also no HDCP port, only VGA and DVI, but you can use it with a component-to-VGA-to-HD adapter from other devices. Many monitors don't have this.* The stand is fully adjustable and can swivel, tilt and rotate the screen between portrait and landscape. Very nice!* There's a handy built-in USB hub, but it turns on when your monitor does.* The deep bevel might bother some people, although it doesn't bother me.* Some people might prefer glossy screens, but I do prefer this one matte texture to avoid glare/reflections. * Power consumption at 50W is about double that of a similarly sized TN, but still much lower than my Trinitron. * The menu is clean and functional. In short, this is by far the best 20-25 inch LCD monitor you can get for the money. now.

Pros
  • widescreen
Cons
  • Motion Blur: If the resolution is set too low, the display may appear blurry or pixelated.
