If you are looking for a compact tape measure that is really convenient to use then this is it. No it's not tiny, if you want the smallest band there are better options. Also, it's not "industrial" so if you want premium tape for everyday carpentry use, there are better options. In my opinion, this band strikes the best balance between "compact" and "useful" I've found. Compared to tiny bands, it feels more secure and is much more prominent (just over 3ft for me) and a tip that doesn't come off when you're trying to measure something. There is no "lock" in the usual sense. On one side of the tape is a pulley about 2/3 or 4/3 the tape diameter that is connected to the rewind mechanism. Pressure on it (as if you're trying to pinch the sides together) will hold the tape in place. With very little practice, it's easy to grab the tape, pull out what you need, and just "hold" it in place with pressure. It also makes it very easy to control the rewind speed, which I like. Size 2 1/4" in diameter and 3/4" thick. It uses a magnet on the back instead of a clip like a standard band, making it more compact and nothing snags when you carry it in your pocket. It's a bit bulky to carry around in your pocket for your daily run, get a really compact band for that (a favorite ultra-compact band is my Komelon model 4110 10ft Key Band). For professional use, get the full size (I like Milwaukee and FastCap 16' or 25'). However, to transport something in the glove compartment, it is ideal. Or if you're doing something where it would be useful to have a usable band but you want to travel as light as possible, this is a very good choice. Small tiny tapes are great when space is at a premium, but with just a little more size (mostly in thickness) you can get a tape that is MUCH easier to read (lines and numbers on a small, compact 1/4" wide Band) .TINY) along with 3ft plus excellent it's a good choice.
