I got the Scangauge II primarily to gauge the ATF temperature. I followed the advice of others and used the service manual procedure to check the ATF level and I always estimated if the level was correct. According to the workshop manual, the ATF level should be checked at a specific ATF temperature. I have followed the Scangauge II setup and tuning instructions closely and it displays the ATF 1 temperature and ATF 2 temperature on my 2013 Nissan Frontier V6. Now I can be sure that the ATF is at the correct level because the ScanGauge II shows the ATF temperature in real time. The tool is more than I was willing to spend, but nothing compared to the cost of repairing an automatic transmission. So I'm very glad I broke down and got the tool I need to correctly check the ATF level on the dipstick. If you do preventative maintenance yourself, do yourself a favor and stop guessing the ATF level and buy one so you can check the ATF at the correct fluid temperature.
