For a piece of plastic this is perfectly normal. I think the design leaves a lot to be desired. Keeping the oil and water elements in place involves a lot of tipping back and forth, being careful not to spill the contents. When you get to the boundary between the two, the spout does a poor job of separating oil and water. I wanted to use it to clarify oil and it's almost useless for that (oil is best put in a small glass with a spout). It's also not very good for separating the sauce. A built-in strainer in the lid clogs big chunks and skips all the little things. And it's plastic. I didn't pour very hot oil in it because I don't want to melt it. So I have to pre-filter the solids with a metal screen. Then what's the point of buying it?
