We bought two of these to use on our trip to Disneyland. They have worked brilliantly in different ways. At first my 5 year old daughter used it as a bracelet on her wrist and always quickly handed me the other end whenever I let go. She liked that she could walk 3 feet from me and still be tied down. And when she occasionally threw a tantrum or wanted to go somewhere without us, she held the leash open. Second, we tied it to our almost two year old's chest. He didn't like being in a wheelchair all the time, so he wore a leash when he could get off and walk. We could follow him with a leash on his chest. Some reviewers said their child could open it and slip off, and I was concerned about that before receiving it. Although you can phrase it in different ways to avoid this. You can zip it up at the back of the chest under the arms. Or you can wrap it around your wrist and then attach a safety pin to one side of the clasp to keep it from coming loose.
