As others have pointed out the instructions are useless but the refractometer itself is great once you figure out how to calibrate it. To calibrate, remove the plastic cover from the blue glass lens. Put 3 drops of extra virgin olive oil on the blue lentil. Close the clear plastic lid by applying oil to the entire jar. Remove the round black plastic cap covering the screw and while looking through the eyepiece at a bright light source, adjust it until it reads 71-72. Brix scale. Note. Refractometers can be calibrated with calibration liquid. Calibration oils with a refractive index of around 70°Bx are not always easy to find. Extra virgin olive oil is specified by the UN FAO in the CODEX STANDARD CODE FOR OLIVE AND PEARL OILS CODEX STAN 33-1981 (Rev. 2-2003) with a refractive index between 1.4677 and 1.4705 at 20 °C, which is 71 °C corresponds to Bx to 72°Bx. Extra virgin olive oil is not as accurate as calibration oils, it is suitable as a calibration standard for beekeeping and brewing purposes. .
