I'm not a trained technician. I have multiple strands of ethernet cables running through my walls. The ends of the cables were unplugged and unmarked, so when four cables came out of the wall at one point, it was unclear which cable went where. After adding connectors to the raw cable, I used this little device to see if the cable was done: (1) Plug a small remote into a cable connector, (2) Plug the main unit into the other end of the cable, and ( 3) Push button indicates if the cable is ready. If it is not complete, then either (a) the remote control and main unit are connected with different cables or (b) there is a problem with the cable (e.g. the plug may not have been installed properly). It works well and I was able to mark my cables.
