This device has the potential to be a phenomenal product, but it has a potentially serious flaw. I've scanned over 5,000 prints with it and found an issue with a bluish spot in the center of the scan, clearly visible on faces and white backgrounds. I contacted Epson and they replaced my first device. The new one was ok for a while, but now it is too. This is particularly frustrating as it is unstable. After extensive testing, all I can say is that the flatness of the photo is (unsurprisingly) very important. The scanner really (understandably) hates shelled photos that cause it to hang or not even feed. However, if you let them pass, you almost never have this problem, perhaps because they nestle closer to the scanner glass. Concave images (scanning surface curved away from the lens) seem to be more suitable for this. I can't blame the device for poorly saved photos that aren't quite flat, and I can't say for sure that's the problem. Remember that if your photos aren't flat, you should first take steps to flatten them. I'm sure this will be a problem for many people. I'm curious if anyone else sees this problem or has other explanations. I've cleared it out of daylight so that's not a problem. Otherwise, I agree with most of the positive comments. very fast, smart device with mostly good UI software, which also does a good job of improving photos, except for red-eye, which is pretty bad. The red-eye feature either skips red-eye or masks spots like the nostrils instead of the eyes. It's also quite sensitive to dust - if you don't clean all five rollers or so, dust streaks will easily appear on your scans. On the other hand, it is very easy to clean. It's expensive, but if you have lots of photos and time then it's worth it compared to outsourcing, especially if you're sharing the cost with other family members/friends. Really great document scanner, also in connection with the Epson scan software. I'd really like to hear more from Epson about the fall issue and maybe see more scanning pressure on the paper or maybe an accessory that helps smooth out the photos if that's really the problem.
