Doesn't fit well in old rooms

I bought this clock to replace a similar clock that no longer works. I carefully measured the hole making sure to find the right size for a replacement. Looks great but comes with an elastic band for a comfortable fit. The problem was that it was too tight and couldn't fit in the hole without the rubber strap curling up and sticking out of the watch edge. I ended up cutting off 2/3 of the elastic and taped the edges to keep it sized. (It was still too loose without the whole group.)
