Keyboard doesn't work!

Just hooked this up to my system as I've just moved. The keyboard doesn't work at all. I tried two different sets of different but new batteries. The mouse works, so the USB is plugged in, but the keyboard doesn't print or even turn on. Very frustrated as I don't have a return window I'm pretty sure I got ripped off. Lessons learned, do not purchase items unless you intend to use them immediately.
