Incorrect I2C address on the board
The I2C address printed on the board was 0x78. The other address you could enable with a jumper was 0x7A. But neither one nor the other worked. I ran i2c_scanner and it was indeed 0x3C. Not the end of the world, but I'm sure some will be upset about it. The display looks nice and bright. Not as fast as SPI, which is fine. No complaints other than the address question.
