Electronic power supplies, also known as "wall warts", come in a variety of shapes, sizes and angles. The unusual shape of this plug helps avoid conflicts between the different power adapters you plug into it. Similarly, this piece's rectangular plug also reduces conflicts between the outlet and nearby furniture. If you connect a power source to this jack, you can press this switch and turn off the power. (Engineer tip: use a recessed rocker switch, or make tabs on either side of it.) This thing feels pretty heavy when you first pick it up, but it turns out to be a feature, especially when you turn things on - and unplug regularly - the extra weight helps keep it in place. (Possible improvement: add some silicone feet to make it even more stable.)
