I had a Canon Rebel for T1i for a few years, before that I had a couple of Canon G series cameras The jump from Rebel to 5D MkII. I decided to skip the xxd series and xd series and go straight to the top because I wanted a camera I could grow into and use for years. I don't know much about cameras but I really like these! I've already taken some amazing shots - the ISO performance really blows my mind after the T1i. I have a long way to go in photography but I really feel like I have the right tools to grow. I bought a great manual for this camera, David Bush's Canon EOS 5D Mark II Digital SLR Guide, and just studied it a bit. I was afraid of the weight, especially with the 24-105mm lens; but it wasn't that bad. I bought a different Crumpler The Industry Disgrace (brown) neck strap to better distribute the weight of the camera than the strap that came with it. My biggest fear was that it would be too much for me, but it really isn't. It has multiple modes for beginners, and the guides and information available online gave me a great start. So don't be afraid to choose this one - you won't regret it if you do.
