The duvet is soft and warm. The lowest setting is usually sufficient for the whole night. For a quick warm up, set it to 2 or 3. I have no idea how scalding the highest setting would be! I'm not brave enough to try. This comforter is plush and soft, but it also crawls very easily, whether on top of or under other comforters, sliding off the bed, to the side or into a ball, leaving all other sheets and comforters mostly in place. Thus, it does not stay in place to evenly heat the bed. The controls show their settings when you turn them on, then the lights turn off. To see if it is enabled or which setting is enabled, you need to change the setting. Then when it's off you're not sure unless you turn on the light to read the display. There's no indicator light and the display backlight goes out, making it unreadable at night when it's cold and you want to check the settings. There is no button that can be pressed to just turn on the display. And when it's on, the light is blue, so it still wakes you up. I love sleeping with an electric blanket. I will not recommend THIS to anyone.
