I have a black protective case that needed to be lightly filed on the left side. It should fit snugly against the side of the laptop. So depending on which protective case you have, you may need to ensure that the ENTIRE length of the device fits snugly against the Macbook. I use Stream2Me and Air Play HD on my Apple TV along with Plex on my Apple TV and the comparison between AirPlay and HDMI is much clearer. Even with third-party apps like Air Parrot 2, which has an excellent wireless AC network that covers my entire house, it's sometimes easier to connect an HDMI cable. I've used the HDMI output at several conferences and meetings and the fact that the HDMI input is on the top makes it a lot easier. So nothing but good things to say about it. I would mention the issue with the covers and their need to be flush.
