Styling the edges for fine/medium type 4 edging didn't help but is great for weighing down and shaping my thick type 4 hair. Me I use it when I want to braid my hair neater and less frizzy. I like the smell which is not strong and doesn't cause a headache. The gel has a medium consistency and the color becomes invisible on black hair. This is not an added hold to style the edges, but rather an added hold for my hair to help it smooth out when braided. It also works for detecting coils and curls. There is no harsh crunch and works better on dampened hair.
