To do this I took a piece of 1/4" steel plate and punched two holes in it so I could screw it in to the body to get a stable measurement platform. With my caliper I used the depth side to measure with to make sure the caliper was stable on the plate. Went like clockwork! Gave me readings that I needed the necessary Make adjustments with shims and you're done and back on track. If you have hundreds of dollars on professional depth gauges, this will work just fine.
