When I tried the optical connection with the device, all I heard was static in my Bluetooth speaker paired with the device. I had to use the line-in/aux-in to get the audio to work. I would prefer to use optical as the sound quality is better. Update: I contacted the seller and they put me through a lot of hooping including sending a video of the non-working product, but they sent me a refund for the product. They said the TV I used with the product was "not capable" with an optical output. If a product is not compatible with my TV with a standard optical output, it will not be compatible with any other product with a standard optical output. A more likely scenario is that the product's optical input just doesn't work. The product entry line works, that's why I use it.
