At first I wasn't sure what the outsole would be. When children first start walking, they are pushed to either not wear shoes or wear shoes like moccasins due to the very thin leather on the soles. The reason for this is that it helps children to feel the ground better and ultimately understand what their feet have to do in order to walk. Better balance etc but many shoes have hard soles and sometimes you want a shoe that you can use and walk on that doesn't have holes in the sole. So I really think that's the best compromise. When my son steps on a small gravel or rock, his foot doesn't hurt, but the sole is flexible enough that he can definitely feel the ground and walk properly. Although I ordered a size 6-12 months and my son is only a few days away from his first birthday, he was able to sew them easier than I had hoped. They fit him but run a bit big.
