Review on πŸŽ₯ Enhance Your Entertainment: Micca Full HD Portable Digital Player - Unmatched Portability and High-Definition Playback by Rob Parsons

Won't play 85-90% of video files on USB hard drive.

This device was very expensive and cheap so I was happy to be able to take a USB hard drive with me on holiday that we could use to watch videos on any TV in any hotel. Well that was a great idea, but the Micca Speck G2 didn't play 85-90% of the MKV files I had on my hard drive; I got a file read error on each of them when trying to play them. Two days after contacting Micca support, they called me back and asked me to send them some video files. After another 2 days they said the files wouldn't play because they needed to be transcoded/converted (to the same format!) using a program called "HandBrake" on my computer. My laptop is very powerful with a very fast processor, but this process took forever (for example, it took an hour and 15 minutes to transcode a single 3GB MKV video file). Truth?!?!? So I have to take the HD out of the computer, put it in the Speck G2, test each video to see if it plays, list the ones that don't play, list the ones on a piece of paper, take the HD out of the G2 , plug it back into my computer, open the software and re-encode 85% of the videos I want to watch on my TV, which would take a full day, etc. Too much work for the hardware that only plays the video should play the USB hard drive via the HDMI cable connected to the TV. Back home, I found that my Roku 2 (which is about the same size as the Speck G2) has a USB hard drive input. Tries. Every video file is played perfectly. Of course, the Roku is $70 and the Speck G2 is $40. But with everything else the Roku has to offer, aside from being able to play USB HD video files correctly, I think the Roku 2 poses no problem; It doesn't take up any more space in my suitcase than the G2 and does exactly what it's supposed to do.

Pros
  • good thing
Cons
  • You could opt for a newer model
