Review on Zulay Stainless Steel Apple Corer by Amanda Reynolds

Much better design in theory than in practice

I make applesauce for my kids all the time. I do a batch about every two weeks, which means I core a dozen apples each time. I was really looking forward to replacing my stock core (a simple solid one from OXO or a similar brand). This design looked great and solved problems with a simple one: a large handle that can be pushed down (useful for my stunt knuckle) and jaws that open to make it easier to push the core out (I hate pulling it out too have to). But the reality was that only the big pen was successful. In fact, the jaws don't work well, especially when you're coring apples. First, they are shifted, which is not very convenient for removing the core. Being two-piece, they also tend to pop open when I push the apple through. Not only does this increase the size of the core, but it also makes it more difficult to remove the core from the apple as the pieces are not actually cut. Often this will simply result in the apple bursting. And then actually draining the core is a pain. It sticks there even worse than in my other grain. I'm going back to my old grains. I wish this handle design was added to a plain center punch.
