Great emergency radio

Having lived in the land of hurricanes and snowstorms we have learned the importance of having an emergency radio on hand to receive weather and evacuation reports. This little bug has pretty much everything you could ever need from an emergency radio - FM/AM/weather/emergency radio channel options, flashlight, flip-up LED light that can be activated while driving, solar battery charging, handle charging, rechargeable battery . , the ability to charge your phone, an SOS signal, waterproofing (although I wouldn't test this by dropping it in a lake), a charging cable, a lightning adapter (which is incredibly thoughtful and useful), a battery indicator, a Setting indicator that glows green when the signal is strong, wrist strap and carry case. We were pleasantly surprised at how light this radio is despite all its features. Others weigh more and when we go camping every gram counts. The SOS signal is also VERY loud. I took it outside and tested it and yes it will definitely go a decent distance. The radio has an antenna that helps with reception and reception is very, very good. We live in the Catskills and are surrounded by dense forest, lots of rocks and a large nature reserve so there aren't many T/R antennas or towers. Even cell phones have reception problems here when near a tower and we have to use repeaters in our house to get a decent signal. We didn't expect to be able to receive so many stations so easily, including stations that we can't even get from the same location with our car stereos. My husband took this a few miles into the woods behind our house (it's a protected wooded area so there are no homes, businesses, power lines, etc. on thousands of acres). He was able to receive clear signals on all three bands, particularly the weather band. I couldn't hear the SOS until he was about half a mile from home, but that may be due to how dense the trees are and absorb the noise. I would imagine it continuing in open country without much obstruction or in an area where the alarm could bounce off rocks and get louder. A nice plus of this radio is that the crank works in both directions - clockwise and counter-clockwise. In addition, it is easy to work with with minimal resistance, so even small children can keep the radio charged. The sunny option is good too, but sunlight isn't always available. While this radio is rechargeable and can be crank powered, I wish it also had a removable battery to cover all the bases when it died. Since this is not the case, we decided to add a battery-powered backup charger to the bag. In this way we have the possibility of getting power immediately when for some reason the battery is low and we need to use the radio before the hand crank or solar energy has sufficiently charged the battery. Backing up your backups is never a bad idea when preparing for something like a hurricane! Another perk we'd like to see are flashing lights that accompany the SOS signal. There is no red LED option or flashing light option. You can choose from three levels of brightness, but this only helps extend battery life. You could probably quickly turn the light on and off to use as a signal instead of automatic flashing lights, or use it as a visual SOS signal. Some radios have this option, although it's not 100% mandatory, but it's nice to have it along with the SOS horn as signal mirrors are useless at night. (Speaking of SOS, make yourself a small morse code card, laminate it and attach it to this radio. If you need to use the flashlight option to signal, you have a cheat sheet to help you send and decode messages in morse code .) General For the price, this little radio has a lot of features. Something is missing, but not as much as other models. Every home should have one of these radios, no matter where you live. Your car should do the same if you spend most of your time on the road. It also makes a great gift for anyone who loves to explore, hike, camp, bike, RV drive, cross country ski - pretty much any activity a person can get stuck at.
