, I used this for my ambient lighting project and it worked great. Very happy with the quality and low latency. Minor issues to note1. If you're not recording, you still need to supply power via USB. I used to have an HDMI splitter that could be powered directly from HDMI, which was nice because you didn't have to turn on your computer when you weren't recording.2. I have an HDMI switcher in front of this unit and if I don't pick up and switch the inputs, the colors get distorted (I think it's some sort of difference between RGB and BGR). When capturing (as it usually does) it doesn't have this problem. Overall, this is an easy-to-use, high-performance capture device (I've seen over 100 FPS on my Raspberry Pi). I've used an HDMI splitter + HDMI to AV + USB AV capture device combo in the past, although the whole setup has cost less. It was a nightmare: taking up a lot of space, lots of cables, lots of power supplies needed, poor image quality, high latency.
