4 digit locks are hard to find. I like the extra digit, which makes it unlikely that someone will try to guess the combination. With a 3-digit combination, anyone with the time can make the several hundred decisions it takes to figure it out (an ex-girlfriend did this about an hour later while I was away). Plastic. Now it's a metal insert that seems solid enough. Also, the dials are slightly larger and there are no corner strips, so the dials protrude from the surface around the entire perimeter. They are easy to turn. I have some old padlocks, silver with black lettering. In the dim light, now that I'm getting older, it's hard to read those numbers. So it's ok for checked baggage and I use it as hand luggage on international flights. It is also easy to read in the cabin at night. I would prefer numbers to letters, but that's ok. Part of the problem with letters is that it's tempting to use actual words as a combination rather than a random arrangement. They even give a list of possible words that can be used as a combination. If I were trying to guess someone's combination, I would start with the list attached to the lock.
