Didn't work on Novelty Lighting

I bought the code from Arduino but it didn't work. The light was on when I first played with it, but only for 5 LEDs (although my code was for 25). 5 LEDs were misplaced across half of the strip and when I accidentally moved the strip more LEDs lit up but none of them were the right color or order. While I was trying to fix the error, the LEDs went out completely. I thought it might be a bad connection and cut off a strip to solder a new connection but nothing worked.
