This device is now working properly and is the perfect complement to my laptop which didn't have a built in microphone. When I first plugged it in, I couldn't get it to hear me unless I yelled at it directly. I cranked up the volume controls and it still wasn't picking up any sound. Then I found a screenshot with a microphone test plan. It still didn't work until I clicked the device properties button. This triggered another volume slider and it was set to zero! When I turned it on at full power, the mic started working perfectly.
