For an amateur, due to the combination of price and optical characteristics, it is practically a must-have, if you are not a categorical fan of portrait photography. Soon, the old 50 f / 1.8, which in my case I sold after buying a forty, will be forced out of the budget niche. Has pros: The picture is good, although sometimes it narrows the dynamic range. On the crop (I have 600d) there is almost a staff member in terms of focal length. They can shoot 90% of the stories. Everything is sharp already from 2.8. Quite resistant to rabbits. Compact and lightweight - fits in any bag; even for the dimensions of compact cameras it is almost not exhibited. Of course the price! But! It is not suitable for video if sound is important in it. See the flaws With its cons. 2 were found: 1. Quiet as expected. When focusing quickly, it hums distinctly both in manual mode and in automatic mode. So, only half of the advantages of STM here is smoothness. Manual focus - not manual, but electrically driven. In this, by the way, it is inferior even to much less modern lenses. Those in manual mode can easily shoot video, if you get used to it, focusing is not audible. It will still have sound. 2. The retractable trunk is flimsy. Once something clicked on it in a bag in a folded state, apparently. I take it out, but the focus does not work. And this is the second day after the purchase. But he took a chance, put the lid back on and pulled lightly on it. And, O WONDERFUL! everything worked! Apparently the trunk moved from the pressure into the dead zone of the motor or wedged it. Since then everything is OK. Rather, features - classic facial portraits cannot be removed - round the physiognomy. And with full-length portraits, a small depth of field is not very pronounced even at 2.8. The hood can only be used threaded, so it will not be easy to protect the trunk from damage.
